Same-Day Total Knee Replacement

Traditionally, total knee replacement surgery required the patient to stay in the hospital for several days. With advanced techniques, it is now possible to perform total knee replacement on an outpatient basis, where the patient goes home either on the same day or the day following surgery. Outpatient knee surgery uses the same implants as traditional surgery, but there is emphasis on rapid recovery including the use of minimally invasive surgical techniques, regional anesthesia, opioid-sparing pain control regimens, and immediate ambulation. Certain patients (those with poor health, high risk for complications, and lacking support at home) may not be candidates for outpatient knee replacement.
