Same-Day Total Hip Replacement

Traditionally, hip replacement surgery required the patient to stay in the hospital for several days. With advanced techniques, it is now possible to perform total hip replacement on a same-day basis, where the patient goes home on the same day of the surgery. Outpatient hip surgery uses the same implants as traditional surgery, but there is emphasis on rapid recovery including the use of minimally invasive surgical techniques, regional anesthesia , opioid-sparing pain control regimens, and immediate ambulation. Certain patients (those with poor health, high risk for complications, and lacking support at home) may not be candidates for same-day hip replacement.
